The Orphic Winds are a New York based wind quintet that are blazing a way through the chamber music world with their deep and passionate love for music and art. Formed in the Spring of 2022, clarinetist Carla Fortman sought out fellow Mannes students with the goal of working with the illustrious Valerie Coleman as their chamber coach and mentor. Since their first rehearsal it became immediately apparent that these young musicians had found a new home and vessel to foster their talents, ideas, and desires to create a lasting impact. What had started out as a simple school project organically grew into something far greater. The Orphic Winds have since made their international debut at the Stellenbosch International Chamber Music Festival, earned a spot with the Orchestra of St. Luke’s Fellowship with Elizabeth Mann as their coach, and can be seen performing around the New York City area as representatives of the Mannes Community Engagement Program. Through riveting programming that highlights the most prolific composers of our generation and generations past, the Orphic Winds are bringing wind chamber music from all corners of the world to any and all who will listen. Acclaimed for the “sensuous, and expressive way” the Orphic Winds play together, audience members should prepare to be drawn into the mystery and excitement of music both old and new.
